Most religious organizations that I know face dissenters. In South Florida, we would see a new store-front church spring up in a vacant space in a strip mall with alarming regularity, signaling that a new leader emerged in a congregation who had a strong following, and the membership would be forced to choose a side.

In the “Methodists vs. Methodists” battle that ended last year, it was de facto tribalism on full display.

There are Mormons that I know of who would dearly love for a schism like the United Methodist Church just went through to take place in Mormonism so they could be more comfortable going back to church in a congregation that is less judgmental of others than the current iteration is.

If that Mormon Church would emerge, I would choose to be back in a Mormon congregation, rather than a Methodist congregation, because of my Mormon heritage. I prefer the Mormon meeting format (yes, even fast and testimony meetings), and I know their hymns better than I know the Methodists hymns.
